Hard Drive Prices On The Rise!

By: Mike Castaldi

November 02

The recent flooding that hit Thailand definitely hit the Thai people hard, but that impact is also being felt worldwide.  Most of the major hard drive manufacturers (Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi, etc.) have significant manufacturing bases in Thailand.  And even if their plants aren’t under water, many of the smaller firms that provide them with component parts are flooded out.  As a result, get ready for hard drive prices to continue rising.  When I look at pricing for 1TB drives, they are currently selling for ~$120.  Not long ago, these same drives were priced in the neighborhood of $60-$70.  The law of supply and demand definitely apply.  Just be prepared for the sticker shock if you haven’t shopped for hard drives in the last week or so.
